Polyester Resin Or Epoxy Resin? What Is The Difference?

Polyester Resin Or Epoxy Resin? What Is The Difference?

There are three main types of thermosetting resins, the two most common of which are: Polyester, epoxy. These two resins have common characteristics but are also very different. It is particularly important to use body protection for the respiratory tract and the eyes in both cases. They can be charged.

However, certain charges differ from one resin to another and can be worked in stratification at a stable temperature between 15 and 25°C.

  1. Polyester Resin

The main advantage of this resin is that it is economical. It is worked on different supports, even if it remains to be preferred on wood or another polyester base, or it is better to favor an epoxy base on epoxy for increased durability.

To make the most of the potential of polyester resin for the qualities advertised, it is, therefore, necessary to work in a temperate environment, with a polyester resin at a moderate temperature on a mold or a part at moderate temperature also, as mentioned above between 15 and 25°C. It remains possible to leave this framework since the polyester resin is quite flexible in terms of use, in particular by changing the catalyst or its dosage.

  1. Epoxy Resin

Epoxy resin, like polyester resin, is a thermosetting compound. However, it requires two components (base + hardener), all of this working on the rule of parts (refer to the technical notice of the product). This resin solution (น้ำยา เร ซิ่น, which is the term in Thai) is perfect for all jobs requiring increased performance or greater durability/solidity.

Unlike polyester resin, it is waterproof by nature, which eliminates any problem related to its immersion or its presence in a humid environment, which is why it is particularly widely used for repairs below the line buoyancy in the nautical environment.

It also has maximum adhesion: that is to say that it holds on any support whatsoever, metal, wood, concrete, polyester lamination, providing greater resistance to mechanical and chemical stresses.

In conclusion, there is no better solution. Solutions are depending on the type of project and its constraints.
